As part of Healthy People 2030, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ 10-year plan to address the nation’s most critical public health priorities and challenges, reducing the proportion of students in grades 9 through 12 who report sunburn is an objective in the area of cancer.
Some highlights:
• The goal is to reduce the percentage of students who report sunburn from 57.2% (in the past 12 months in 2017) to 52.2%.
• The plan acknowledges that “sunburn, especially early in life, can increase the risk of skin cancer.”
• The plan cites the success of educational and other community programs in promoting sun-safe behaviors.
