Taft Elementary School in Riverside, CA participated in Don’t Fry Day on Fri., May 25 by encouraging students to Slip, Slop, Slap, or Wrap during recess. Students could Slip on a long sleeve shirt or into the shade, Slop on Sunscreen, Slap on a hat or Wrap on sunglasses. Students who practiced these behaviors earned a chance to win prizes from Northwestern University donated by ASDSA President-elect, Murad Alam, MD, MBA.
In the classroom, students also created posters to promote Don’t Fry Day and participated in a quiz from the Skin Cancer Foundation to discuss skin types and the universal need for sun protection.
ASDSA’s SUNucate model legislation is in part based on legislation from California that ensures students can bring and apply sunscreen at school and encourages schools to consider curriculum to raise awareness of skin cancer by sharing basic facts on the disease and how to reduce risk of developing it.
